ABBTF Bricklaying Trade Skills Recognition Support Western Australia
Tired of being a brickies labourer? Are you not getting the recognition you deserve for your bricklaying skills? The Australian Brick & Blocklaying Training Foundation supports all forms of bricklayer training including trade assessment. Given the most recent attention trade qualification compliancy is getting nationally, perhaps now is the right time to look at obtaining a trade qualification. In Western Australia only approximately 30% of all bricklayers have a trade qualification, compared to Queensland at about 56%! The value of trade qualifications have been hotly debated and questioned many times over. Many brickies ask these questions; Why should I get a qualification when I am earning good money already and work is plentiful? What is the point of a trade qualification when I have never been asked to show my trade papers? I will not earn any more or less if I have a trade qualification? The answers to these questions are; The industry is very cyclical, we experience good times and challenging times, additional competency may mean new and sustainable work opportunity. Some major builders are asking for trade qualifications, the world is becoming more litigious and builders need to minimise risk and maximise quality. As the average age of bricklayers increases and pent up demand for housing increases, those with a wide variety of trade skills will simply make more money! As from the 1st of November, the 1st 25 brickies that register for RPL and obtain a trade qualification by the end of June 2011 will receive a bonus from the ABBTF of $1,000. The $1,000 is in lieu of our current $400 tool voucher, however it is in surplus of the CTF 80% fee reduction. Achieving a trade qualification via RPL is as important as an apprentice completing their apprenticeship and equally recognised by industry!
